Sector Information

INDUSTRY STATISTICS

·          Approximately two million people work in the hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism sector in the
UK

·          The sector is forecast to continue to grow over the next 10 years, with a particular increase in demand for managers

·          Currently, the largest skills gaps in the sector are customer service and craft chef skills

·          A third of the hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism workforce are under the age of 25

·          Seven percent of the HLTT workforce are self-employed

THE PEOPLE 1ST FOOTPRINT 

A footprint is the sector coverage for each Sector Skills Council (SSC). It helps to identify what is covered by each sector, therefore avoiding unnecessary overlaps and identifying any gaps in coverage. People1st is the SSC for Hospitality, Leisure, Travel and Tourism (HLTT). As SSCs are employer led, the structure of the footprint was developed by employers, and the HLTT sector is currently comprised of 14 industries: 

1 – Hotels

  • Includes budget hotels, bed and breakfast accommodation, one star, two star, three star, four star and five star

  • Relevant Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) – 55.1 (Hotels) 

2 – Restaurants

  • Includes fast food establishments (e.g. McDonalds, KFC), more traditional fast food outlets (e.g. fish and chip shops, sandwich bars), cafes, coffee shops, mainstream restaurants, and fine dining.

  • Relevant SIC – 55.3 (Restaurants)

3 – Pubs, Bars and Nightclubs

  • Includes managed houses (owned by a brewery employing salaried management staff), tenanted or leased pubs (occupied by licensees who rent and take their beer supply from brewery), freehouses (owned and managed by licensee), and nightclubs (defined as establishments where the primary offer is that of dancing to music, with food and drink offered as ancillary items)

  • Relevant SIC – 55.4 (Bars)

4 – Contract Food Service Providers

  • Classified within the following industrial areas – travel, business, retail, education, health care, remote and offshore locations, corporate hospitality and executive dining, government and local authority provision, leisure venues and events.
  • Relevant SIC – 55.5 (Canteens and catering)

5 – Hospitality Services

  •  

    Also classified within the following industrial areas – travel, business, retail, education, health care, remote and offshore locations, corporate hospitality and executive dining, government and local authority provision, leisure venues and events.

  • Relevant SIC – No SIC used

6 – Membership Clubs

  • Includes professional or employment association clubs, politically affiliated clubs, clubs for particular cultural interests and sporting clubs.

  • Relevant SIC – 92.34/2 (Other entertainment activities not elsewhere classified)

7 – Events 

  • Includes temporary sporting events, music events, themed events and functions, meetings and conferences and exhibitions. 
  • Relevant SIC – 70.20/1 (Letting of conference and exhibition centres) 

8 – Gambling 

  • Includes lotteries, machines, casinos, football pools, bingo, betting. 
  • Relevant SIC – 92.71 (Gambling and betting activities) 

9 – Travel Services 

  • Includes travel agencies, outbound tour operators, travel ticketing agencies and bureaux de change. 
  • Relevant SIC – 63.30/1 (Activities of travel agencies) and 63.30-2 (Activities of travel organisers) 

10 – Tourist Services 

  • Includes national and regional tourist boards, tourist information centres, inbound and domestic tour operators. 
  • Relevant SIC –  63.30/3 (Activities of tour guides) and 36.30/9 (Other tourist assistance activities not elsewhere classified)

11 – Visitor Attractions

  • Includes fairground attractions (including theme parks), piers, historic railways and other city attractions (Madame Tussauds etc) 
  • Relevant SIC – 92.33 (fair and amusement park activities) 

12 – Youth Hostels

  • Hostels are a unique form of accommodation, in that nearly all facilities are shared with other guests. Rooms are dormitory style and are usually furnished with bunk beds.

  • Relevant SIC – 55.21 (Youth hostels and mountain refuges)

13 – Holiday Parks

  • Includes residential parks, chalets and lodges, caravan parks, touring caravan sites and camp sites.

  • Relevant SIC – 55.23/1 (Holiday centres and holiday villages)

14 – Self Catering Accommodation

  • Includes the renting of self catering accommodation, such as cottages, apartments, villas or houses.

  • Relevant SIC – 55.23/2 (Other self catering holiday accommodation)
